Sample HOTS Question

(Problem Solving)

a. In your answer to this question name ONE of the thinking skills from the Appendix.

Thinking skill I chose: Problem Solving

b. Answer the question showing appropriate evidence of the use of the chosen thinking skill.

"Oh I kept the first for another day"

What did the speaker keep for another day? Do you agree with his decision?

Answer: In the poem "The Road Not Taken," the speaker had a problem. He had to decide whether to take the road others had taken before (the reliable choice) or the road that was grassy and wanted wear (the choice nobody had taken before). When the speaker decided to keep the first for another day, he decided to take the second road (the riskier one). I agree with the speaker. I believe that in life one must take risks and try new things. That is what makes life interesting and worth living.
