Present Perfect Simple

 USES

1. Actions that have happened in the past without a reference to time.

  • We have studied the present perfect once before.  

2. Actions that have happened multiple times in the past.  

  • I have taught this subject quite a few time in the past. 

3. Actions that have occurred in the past but have a present effect.  

  • We have studied the present perfect  for a few weeks, so we are ready for the exam.

4. Actions that have just occurred in the recent past. 
  • We have just finished studying the present perfect!

5. Sometimes, for actions that have started in the past but have continued until the present. (especially for stative verbs)

  • Most of the students say that they have known this material for years. 

FORM

  • Positive: Subject + have/has + verb3 + rest of the sentence. 
    • I have studied English.

  • Negative: Subject + have/has + not + verb3 + rest of the sentence.
    • I have not studied English.

  •  YES/NO Questions: Have/Has + subject + verb3 + rest of the question?
    • Have you ever studied English?

  • WH Questions: WH word + have/has + subject + verb3 + rest of question?
    • Why have you studied English?
