Past Perfect Simple

 USES

1. An action that occurred prior to another action in the past. 

    (the past of the past)

  • I studied the same English subject that I had studied in 10th grade. 


FORM

  • Positive: Subject + had + V3 + rest of the sentence. 
    • We had studied the subject before.
  • Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + V3 + rest of the sentence.  
    • I had not studied the subject before. 
  •  YES/NO Questions: Had + subject + V3 + rest of the question?
    • Had you studied the subject before?
  • WH Questions: WH word + had + subject + V3 + rest of the question?
    • When had you studied the subject?

VERB USAGE
  • had is used for all subjects

 TIPS & TIME EXPRESSIONS

  • Many times, there is a past simple verb in the same sentence or the sentence before/after.
