Past Perfect Progressive

 USES

1. An action that started in the past and continued to another time in the past. 

  • I had been studying English for many years before I became a teacher.


FORM

  • Positive: Subject + had + been + verb(ing) + rest of the sentence. 
    • We had been studying the past perfect progressive.

  • Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + been + verb(ing) + rest of the sentence.  
    • I had not been studying the past perfect progressive. 

  •  YES/NO Questions: Had + subject + been + verb(ing) + rest of the question?
    • Had you been studying the past perfect progressive?

  • WH Questions: WH word + had + subject + been + verb(ing) + rest of the question?
    • Why had you been studying the past perfect progressive?

VERB USAGE
  • had is used for all subjects
