USES
1. An action that occurred prior to another action in the past.
(the past of the past)
- I studied the same English subject that I had studied in 10th grade.
FORM
- Positive: Subject + had + V3 + rest of the sentence.
- We had studied the subject before.
- Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + V3 + rest of the sentence.
- I had not studied the subject before.
- YES/NO Questions: Had + subject + V3 + rest of the question?
- Had you studied the subject before?
- WH Questions: WH word + had + subject + V3 + rest of the question?
- When had you studied the subject?
- had is used for all subjects
