1. An action that started in the past and continued to another time in the past.
- I had been studying English for many years before I became a teacher.
FORM
- Positive: Subject + had + been + verb(ing) + rest of the sentence.
- We had been studying the past perfect progressive.
- Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + been + verb(ing) + rest of the sentence.
- I had not been studying the past perfect progressive.
- YES/NO Questions: Had + subject + been + verb(ing) + rest of the question?
- Had you been studying the past perfect progressive?
- WH Questions: WH word + had + subject + been + verb(ing) + rest of the question?
- Why had you been studying the past perfect progressive?
- had is used for all subjects
